Automating Large-Scale Sports Tournament Streaming with Streamcake

DETAILS

Client: Wiistream

Project: Streamcake

How Layercake helped Wiistream automate live sports tournament streaming across 110 concurrent courts using event-driven orchestration and real-time workflow automation.

GETTING TO KNOW WIISTREAM

Wiistream is a scalable OTT backend platform designed to automate live sports tournament streaming at enterprise scale. By integrating directly with tournament scheduling systems and live streaming infrastructure, Wiistream enables real-time event publishing with minimal manual intervention.

Supporting high-frequency live sports environments, Wiistream required a scalable and resilient workflow capable of managing thousands of matches across multiple concurrent courts while maintaining operational efficiency and broadcast reliability.

OVERVIEW

Layercake partnered with Wiistream to design and deploy a fully automated, event-driven sports streaming workflow powered by Streamcake.

The solution enables automated event creation, real-time schedule updates and seamless publishing to AIM+ TV, removing the need for manual event management during large-scale tournaments.

By shifting from traditional schedule-based workflows to a real-time orchestration model, Streamcake ensures live streams dynamically adapt as matches run ahead of or behind schedule, significantly reducing operational overhead and improving reliability across high-volume events.

BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Wiistream needed to support large-scale live tournament coverage across dozens of simultaneous courts while maintaining accuracy, consistency and operational efficiency.

Traditional schedule-based workflows created several challenges:

  • Manual event creation and management
  • Live streams becoming misaligned when matches ran late
  • Increased operational complexity during high-volume tournaments
  • Difficulty scaling coverage without increasing staffing requirements
  • Risk of incorrect stream sequencing and delayed publishing

As tournament schedules shifted throughout the day, delays frequently cascaded across multiple courts, creating inconsistencies between published schedules and live streams.

Wiistream required a solution capable of dynamically responding to real-time match progress while automating the full event lifecycle.

SOLUTION

Using Streamcake, Layercake’s Media Orchestration and Automation Platform, Layercake implemented a fully automated, event-driven orchestration workflow integrated directly with Sports Wrench, Advanced Event Systems (AES) and AIM+ TV.

Rather than relying solely on fixed schedules, Streamcake dynamically responds to live match completion data entered by tournament managers on-site.

Key Workflow Features

  • Automated Event Creation
  • Tournament schedule data is automatically ingested from Wiistream source file and converted into structured Streamcake events, complete with:
  • Match UUIDs
  • Court mapping
  • ISO start times
  • Team and division metadata
  • Tournament information

This removed the need for manual event setup and significantly reduced operational overhead.

Event-Driven Match Automation

The first match on each court begins according to schedule, while subsequent matches are triggered dynamically through API polling and webhook events.

As matches conclude:

  • Wiistream sends “end_game” webhooks to Streamcake
  • Streamcake automatically stops the current stream
  • The next scheduled event is launched automatically
  • Live and VOD assets are published directly to AIM+ TV

This ensures accurate stream sequencing even when tournament schedules change throughout the day.

Scalable Multi-Court Architecture

The solution was designed to support streaming on up to 110 concurrent courts operating simultaneously.

Each court is mapped one-to-one with a dedicated RTMP/SRT Streamcake endpoint source feed, while mobile devices running Larix Broadcaster push the source live feeds directly into Streamcake which orchestrates the streaming events and associated managed workflows.

The architecture supports:

  • Automated event-to-input mapping
  • Real-time webhook orchestration
  • Automated VOD asset creation
  • Cloudflare-backed operational resilience
  • Continuous monitoring and validation workflows
